âWe canât save them! Thatâs what Iâve been trying to tell you!â Hawtur shut his eyes and shook his head like a dog shaking a rat. âThere are no good solutions here. Youâve put us in an impossible situation. We will lose this city no matter what, these people will die no matter what. All I am saying is that this is the best option available to us. We save what we can and leave.â
âWe canât do that! The people here believe in us! They are ready to follow us and be loyal members of the Alliance. We canât turn our backs on them and let them all be massacred. That goes against everything we stand for.â
âIs it us they believe in or their rabbit cult?â Hawtur sneered. âThey think we worship a rabbit god. It might be worth leaving this place to its fate just to make it easier for us to disavow the whole notion. Do you understand how blasphemous the very idea is to The One We Must Follow?â
âThis was not my doing! The religion already existed, and they already believed we were followers. I had to go along with it, or they wouldnât listen.â
âI was told this religion was founded by a friend of yours. A common thief who is also impersonating a White Mage. Pretending to be a member of the Order is a capital offense, but rather than execute this man you helped him. And now you want to recruit him?â
Melissa paused. âWho told you about that?â
âThere arenât that many secrets in the upper echelons of the Order. Itâs true isnât it?â
âI wouldnât describe him as a friend exactly. While it is true, he has committed minor wrongdoings, he has a massive capacity for mana and a deep Talent in Healing. He could be a huge asset to the Order one day. All he needs is the proper indoctrination.â
âWhat he needs is the sharp end of a knife. Any man who falsely wears our robes has earned death.â
Scrimshaw nodded at this.
âMinister Barrows has granted him a pardon and has agreed to his recruitment. It is thanks to him we are in this position.â
âI would think that earns blame not thanks. I donât know why Minister Barrows puts so much faith in your judgment. The two of you must be very close. I am sure you share an intimate understanding of one another.â
Her golden eyes bore into his. âIâve earned Minister Barrowsâs respect though hard work. Iâve done nothing inappropriate with him.â
âIâm sure,â Hawtur said dismissively.
She hated the unstated assumption that the only way she could have gotten the ministerâs support was through immoral acts. The obvious suggestion being it could not possibly have been earned by honest means.
âWhen all this is over donât be surprised if the Order has a new Keeper of Knowledge. One who might be a little less forgiving of your initiative.â
That was possible. Even if Minister Barrows kept his position if things fell apart here he would lose confidence in her.
